I was shocked to learn that "on average a child in an upper-middle-class family has heard 35 million more words than a poor child". I never would have dreamed that to be possible. It is a tough situation the teachers at P.S 142 are in, but they are doing their best. They are being creative and trying to catch the students up. I think it is important for those children to learn words from the real world. I was also very surprised to hear that a child had not been in a car before. It just goes to show you how different other people's lives are from your own. I think the students getting to have these hands-on experiences will be greatly benefited.
